DAY TRIPS
Otway Paradise Cottages offers an ideal base from which to explore the numerous places of interest in the Apollo Bay area. Some suggestions are the several waterfalls, the Otway Fly tree top walk, the Twelve Apostles and the Cape Otway Lighthouse.
The Otway Fly The Otway Fly is a 600 metre long walkway, 25 metres above the forest floor, made from more than 120 tonnes of steel. The Otway fly holds different events and activities over school holidays and peak periods. Check out their website for further details and pricing. Prehistoric Path You may or may not have seen the new attraction within the attraction, the Prehistoric Path where around every corner is a dinosaur. There is great relevance of dinosaurs to the area back in dinosaurian ages and we carry some fantastic publications relative to history of the Otway Ranges and dinosaur cove. Upgraded interpretation boards for the dinosaurs have recently been installed. If you’ve not seen this part of the attraction you must include us as a must do next time you are in the area! Cape Otway Lighthouse There are numerous waterfalls in the Otways. Marriners Falls is a two hour return walk from Otway Paradise Cottages, or approximately 45 minutes return walk from the start of the track at the end of the Barham River Road. A drive along Turtons Track, through the rainforest, will lead you to Beauchamp and Hopetoun Falls. Hopetoun Falls may be viewed from a platform near the car park. Beauchamp Falls a one and a half hour walk. Triplet Falls is a moderate one hour walk with stairs. Triplet Falls is located close to the Otway Fly tree top walk. More information about these waterfalls is provided in your cottage. The Twelve Apostles were once part of the cliffs of Port Campbell which have eroded away over time. The cliffs began to form 10 -20 million years ago under the sea, from the build up of skeletons of countless millions of tiny marine animals. When the sea level retreated the soft limestone was exposed to the wild seas and winds of the Southern Ocean.
GLOW WORMS
Glow Worms can be seen in several places on our property just a short walk from your cottage. They can be seen every evening of the year. Glow worms are not worms, but the larvae of fly like insects called fungus gnats. They are harmless (and do not bite)! Many thousands of these glowing larvae live together in colonies producing a spectacular effect.
BEACHES
The west coast of Victoria has amazing beaches and a drive along the Great Ocean Road is a spectacular sight. Apollo Bay has plenty of fabulous beaches catering to all levels of swimmers and water activities. Otway Paradise Cottages is 9kms from the main beach of Apollo Bay. Apollo Bay Main Beach The main beach of Apollo Bay offers kilometres of golden beach and stretches from Wild Dog road to the Apollo Bay Breakwater. The beach is patrolled over the holiday periods by the Apollo Bay Surf Life Saving Club. The Beach is excellent for swimming and other water activites, especially surf fishing. The Back Beach is a local name given to the second strip of beach at Apollo Bay. Running from the river mouth of the Barham River it continues around Mounts Bay to Marengo. It is also good for surf fishing. Marengo Beach As part of Apollo Bay's back beach, the Marengo Beach is an excellent spot for swimming. On the west side of the beach begins a rocky shelf around Hayley point. The shelf offers a vast amount of rock pools for children and adults alike to explore. Stretching from roughly around Wild Dog Road, the beach pans eastwards before meeting the rocky foreshore wich continues to Skenes Creek. Besides the calmer "Bay" waters there are also excellent surfing spots.

The Cape Otway Lighthouse was built in response to the great loss of ships and life along the "Shipwreck Coast". The lighthouse was opened in 1848, built on the cliffs at Cape Otway. It was only the second lighthouse to be built on mainland Australia. The Cape Otway Lighthouse and the King Island Lighthouse formed the passage in Bass Strait through which all English ships bound for Melbourne and Sydney had to pass. In 1959, one of the earliest telegraph stations was added to the facility, soon connecting Tasmania to the mainland through Cape Otway and Melbourne. Outside the lightstation grounds there are marked walking tracks. It is an easy 30 minute walk to the cemetery.
